In Blacksburg, Virginia, two young mages are drawn into conflict with a local religious cult in order to prevent large scale destruction. Matt Timmons, a guarded Texan gifted with empathy and illusion, still scarred by a difficult childhood in Austin, and Jacinder “Jae” Mashwari, an Indian-American quantum-physics grad student who manipulates the aether—the sub-reality energy field beneath creation—while balancing science, her Catholic faith, and magic.Following the theft of magical stones from a local jewelry store, the two students begin investigating, knowing the police will not be able to handle a magical threat. Their investigation leads them to the leader of a local religious group, the Children of the Sun. Matt and Jae discover that the leader, High Arch Sammels, is a fire elemental who has been trapped on Earth for hundreds of years. He has a way home; a ritual that threatens to crack reality itself.Jae and Matt race to stop Sammels from completing his ritual. Jae’s understanding of magic and physics offers a plan. Matt’s skill with illusions reinforced with empathic magic provides the way. It all comes crashing together in a high-stakes, climactic battle.
